The Niger State Police Command has detained a 59-year-old man identified as Julius Nyikwa, who is visually impaired, for the alleged rape of a 10-year-old girl described as his wife’s niece.

The incident reportedly took place in the Keteren-Gwari community in Minna, where the suspect and the child reside in the same family compound. Authorities state that on February 16, 2026, around 2:00 p.m., police at ‘B’ Division in Minna received a report of rape involving Nyikwa and the minor.

Investigations indicate the suspect allegedly lured the girl into his room on multiple occasions and engaged in sexual acts with her. The most recent alleged incident came to light when the child’s grandmother noticed her entering the suspect’s room, raised an alarm, and neighbors intervened, leading to his immediate arrest.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest and emphasized that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation. The command has assured the public that the suspect will face prosecution in court once inquiries are complete.

This case forms part of broader efforts by the Niger State Police to address sexual offenses against minors, with several related arrests reported in the state during February 2026.

Child sexual abuse is a serious crime with lasting harm—survivors and families are encouraged to report incidents promptly to authorities or trusted support organizations.
