The disability community in Enugu State has applauded Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for officially inaugurating the Enugu State Disability Commission — a major milestone long-awaited by advocates and persons with disabilities across the state.

The commission was formally inaugurated on Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Government House, Enugu, by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who represented the Governor.

In a statement issued and signed by Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, (JONAPWD) Enugu State Chapter and a member of the newly inaugurated Enugu State Disability Commission, the association expressed deep appreciation to Governor Mbah for keeping his promise and demonstrating strong political will toward disability inclusion. The association praised the Governor as a leader “who means what he says and says what he means,” noting that his administration has achieved what several past administrations could not accomplish throughout their tenures.

JONAPWD also highlighted the instrumental role of the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Hon. Ngozi Enih, describing her as a true champion for disability rights and inclusion. Her leadership, the statement noted, continues to inspire confidence among persons with disabilities and civil society groups.

The organization further extended gratitude to civil society partners, organizations of persons with disabilities, media allies, and disability advocates who contributed to the push for institutional reforms. Their collective support, JONAPWD said, played a critical role in achieving this landmark development.

Newly appointed Executive Chairman, Mr. Jude Eze, Secretary, Barr. Juliet Nkiru Okonkwo, and other board members of the Disability Commission also received warm congratulations from the disability community. JONAPWD urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively with the board to drive sustainable, inclusive development that benefits citizens with disabilities across Enugu State.

The association reaffirmed its confidence in Governor Mbah’s administration, expressing optimism that the inauguration of the commission marks the beginning of deeper, structural reforms that will strengthen inclusion and accessibility in the state.
